the japanese maple is a hardy little sucker. he is doing just fine, even though momma's little helper did a number on him last winter. emmie chewed off all but 1 branch, but luckily that remaining 1 branch jutted out and curls back over the tree. the leaves are filing in nicely, and the tree is starting to grow new branches out of the limbs and trunks. i think it's doing very well, but i am still going to clear out the ground cover that i hate anyway around the tree.
